WHAT PHARAOH NEVER KNEW

The story of the exodus from Egypt is a defining moment in the pages of Scripture, as well as in the history of the world. The liberation of the people of Israel set events into motion that would ripple down through the centuries. It is a moment in history remembered and held sacred by Jews and Christians alike. It is a story that has been retold countless times by faithful believers.
Despite its revered status, and the attention devoted to retelling it every year, a surprising detail of information is left out of the telling that significantly alters the story of the exodus. A repeated detail is given throughout the account that directly involves Pharaoh and his reason for refusing to let the people go, and yet is one that seemingly every single film, commentator, rabbi, preacher, and Bible scholar either forget about or simply not understand. This one detail drastically changes how the exodus story is understood from our perspective. By the end of this study, you will never again be able to look at the exodus events the same way, and will finally approach the amazing events in the way they were correctly intended to be viewed. That’s right – the exodus story has been told wrong for countless years! I know that is a very grandiose claim to make, but by the end of this study, you will see that it is entirely legitimate!

To begin, let us establish a few details that are worth bringing up. Firstly, when Moses encountered the burning bush in the wilderness, the purpose of the Holy One was revealed that He was going to rescue His people from the Egyptians and return them to the land given to Abraham in covenant. This is stated explicitly by the Holy One in Exodus 3:8-10, which says:
3:8 And I have descended to deliver them from the hand of the Mitsrim, and to elevate them from that land to a land good and wide, to a land flowing [with] milk and honey, to a place of the K’naani, and the Khitti, and the Emori, and the P’rizzi, and the Khiwi, and the Y’vusi.
3:9 And now, see, the cry of the sons of Yisra’El has come to Me, and even I have seen the oppression which the Mitsrim oppress them.
3:10 And now, come, and I shall send you to Par’oh, and you shall bring My people, the sons of Yisra’El, from Mitsrayim.
The purpose is to bring the descendants of Jacob out of Egypt and into the land promised to Abraham. There is no question as to what the goal of Moses will be. It is clearly told to us in the text.
3:8 And I have descended to deliver them from the hand of the Mitsrim, and to elevate them from that land to a land good and wide, to a land flowing [with] milk and honey, to a place of the K’naani, and the Khitti, and the Emori, and the P’rizzi, and the Khiwi, and the Y’vusi.
3:9 And now, see, the cry of the sons of Yisra’El has come to Me, and even I have seen the oppression which the Mitsrim oppress them.
3:10 And now, come, and I shall send you to Par’oh, and you shall bring My people, the sons of Yisra’El, from Mitsrayim.

The next detail worth bringing up is what Moses was to tell the people of Israel when he returned to Egypt. This is dictated to him directly by the Holy One in Exodus 3:16-17, which says:
3:16 Walk, and gather the elders of Yisra’El, and say to them: “YHWH the Eloah of your fathers, appeared to me – the Eloah of Avraham, Yitskhaq, and Yaaqov, saying, ‘I have certainly visited you, and what is done to you in Mitsrayim.
3:17 And I said, “I shall elevate you from the affliction of Mitsrayim to the land of the K’naani, and the Khitti, and the Emori, and the P’rizzi, and the Khiwi, and the Y’vusi, to a land flowing [with] milk and honey.”’”
This detail is what Moses was told to convey to the elders of his own people. They were to know exactly what he was there to do. No leader among the Hebrews would have to wonder what his purpose was in their midst. He was there to deliver them from the land of Egypt and return them to the land promised to them in covenant. This is simple. This is direct. This is the whole truth.
3:16 Walk, and gather the elders of Yisra’El, and say to them: “YHWH the Eloah of your fathers, appeared to me – the Eloah of Avraham, Yitskhaq, and Yaaqov, saying, ‘I have certainly visited you, and what is done to you in Mitsrayim.

And at the end of this passage, Bible teachers have apparently quit paying attention to the very next verse, which is vitally important to how the rest of the exodus account plays out, but never seems to be considered. That next verse – 3:18 – reads as such:
“And they shall listen to your voice, and you shall come – you and the elders of Yisra’El, to the king of Mitsrayim, and you shall say to him, ‘YHWH the Eloah of the Ivrim has met with us, and now, let us walk, please, a path of three days into the wilderness, and sacrifice to YHWH our Elohim.’”
Stop. Please, reread the above verse.

However, Moses was commanded by the Holy One to tell Pharaoh something entirely different - his request was for something that the Holy One never intended to actually do!
Moses was not to mention to Pharaoh that he came to set his slave labor force free. There is never a booming directive of, “let my people go forever!” If you’ve been taught that Moses came to the courts of Egypt demanding that Pharaoh allow the people of Israel to go home to Canaan, you’ve been taught a falsehood. That is not what the Torah tells us happened. Pharaoh was not given the same information that the elders of Israel were given. The Holy One very specifically told Moses what to tell the elders of Israel and what to tell the king of Egypt – and it was not the same set of information. The king of Egypt was not allowed to know the ultimate plan of the Most High for His people. Pharaoh had no idea that Moses was there to extract the people of Israel completely from the land of Egypt. All Pharaoh knew was that Moses wanted the people to be granted a one-time request for a worship ceremony.
Does such an idea surprise you? The text is as clear as can be, and as we shall see, it repeats this piece of information over and over again throughout the grand spectacle of the plagues on Egypt. This is not something I have read into the text as a wild interpretation. This is the blatant Word of Elohim being read without any religious filter in place. You shall see that this is not a hidden secret of Scripture, but rather, is repeated time after time in the pages of the book of Exodus.
Does such an idea surprise you? The text is as clear as can be, and as we shall see, it repeats this piece of information over and over again throughout the grand spectacle of the plagues on Egypt. The very first meeting of Moses with the Pharaoh contains this detail in full view of the reader. Note the words of Exodus 5:1-3 with the truth now in mind:
5:1 And afterward entered Mosheh and Aharon, and they said to Par’oh, “Thus says YHWH the Eloah of Yisra’El: ‘Send forth My people, and they shall have a festival for Me in the wilderness.’”
5:2 And Par’oh said, “Who is YHWH, that I should listen to His voice, to send forth Yisra’El? I do not know YHWH, and also, Yisra’El I shall not send forth!”
5:3 And they said, “The Eloah of the Ivrim has met with us. Do let us walk, please, a path of three days into the wilderness, and we shall sacrifice to YHWH our Elohim, lest He strike us with pestilence, or with a sword.”
5:1 And afterward entered Mosheh and Aharon, and they said to Par’oh, “Thus says YHWH the Eloah of Yisra’El: ‘Send forth My people, and they shall have a festival for Me in the wilderness.’”
5:2 And Par’oh said, “Who is YHWH, that I should listen to His voice, to send forth Yisra’El? I do not know YHWH, and also, Yisra’El I shall not send forth!”
5:3 And they said, “The Eloah of the Ivrim has met with us. Do let us walk, please, a path of three days into the wilderness, and we shall sacrifice to YHWH our Elohim, lest He strike us with pestilence, or with a sword.”

Of course, Pharaoh refuses, and only increases the workload of the Hebrew slaves, forcing them to find their own straw to mix into the mud for the making of bricks. Furthermore, in verse 8-9, he makes this declaration against them, and references the request originally made to him:
5:8 “And the tally of the bricks which they made three days, do set upon them. You shall not diminish from it, for they are idle! Concerning this they cry, to say, ‘Let us walk, to sacrifice to our Elohim!’
5:9 There shall be heavy service upon the men, and they shall labor in it, and not gaze at false words.”
This greater demand upon them causes them to cry out to Pharaoh, and in the same chapter, in verse 17, he responds to their complaints with this statement:
And he said, “Idle! You are idle! Upon this you say, ‘Do let us walk, to sacrifice to YHWH!’”
There is nothing in his mind in either of these passages worrying about losing his slave labor force for good. Rather, he had no desire to let them worship their deity. In Exodus 7:16, and in 8:1, are the next requests to send the people forth to worship the Holy One, and Pharaoh denies them this simple thing.

At the plague of frogs, Pharaoh seriously considers allowing the request to be granted, as the text records in 8:8 this detail:
And Phar’oh called to Mosheh and to Aharon, and said, “Do entreat unto YHWH, and He shall remove the frogs from me, and from my people, and I shall send forth the people, and they shall sacrifice to YHWH!”
He attempts to strike a deal with the Holy One: freedom from the frogs will get the people their worship ceremony in the wilderness. He says nothing about sending them out to never return. That was never part of the deal originally proposed by Moses. It was always presented to Pharaoh as a limited worship service for the Hebrew people. This is upheld also in the reply Moses gives to Pharaoh, found in 8:9, where he has no problem with what Pharaoh has said. If Pharaoh had misunderstood the intent of sending out the people, this would have been the perfect time for Moses to tell him that they actually wanted to go away forever – but Moses makes no mention of that reality, because that piece of information was not a detail Pharaoh was supposed to know!

Right before the plague of the swarms of insects, in 8:20-21, Moses again makes his request for the people to go and worship the Holy One in the wilderness. Not once does he ask Pharaoh to free the Hebrews. At the severity of this plague, Pharaoh relents, however, and calls for Moses to go and do as he had asked. In 8:25-29, we read the details that maintain the reality that the Hebrews only asked for a worship service, and not complete freedom:
8:25 And Phar’oh called to Mosheh, and for Aharon, and said, “Do walk, do sacrifice to your Elohim in the land!”
8:26 And Mosheh said, “It is not proper for the deeds, for the abomination of the Mitsrim shall we sacrifice to YHWH our Elohim. See, shall we sacrifice the abomination of the Mitsrim before their eyes, and they not stone us?
8:27 A path of three days we shall walk into the wilderness, and we shall sacrifice to YHWH our Elohim, as which He said to us.”
8:28 And Par’oh said, “I shall send you forth, and you shall sacrifice to YHWH your Elohim in the wilderness – only, you shall certainly not walk far away. Do entreat on my behalf!”
8:29 And Mosheh said, “See, I go out from you, and I shall entreat YHWH, and the swarms depart from Par’oh – from his servants, and from his people, tomorrow. Only, no further does Par’oh be deceitful to not send forth the people to sacrifice to YHWH!”
8:25 And Phar’oh called to Mosheh, and for Aharon, and said, “Do walk, do sacrifice to your Elohim in the land!”
8:26 And Mosheh said, “It is not proper for the deeds, for the abomination of the Mitsrim shall we sacrifice to YHWH our Elohim. See, shall we sacrifice the abomination of the Mitsrim before their eyes, and they not stone us?
8:27 A path of three days we shall walk into the wilderness, and we shall sacrifice to YHWH our Elohim, as which He said to us.”
8:28 And Par’oh said, “I shall send you forth, and you shall sacrifice to YHWH your Elohim in the wilderness – only, you shall certainly not walk far away. Do entreat on my behalf!”
8:29 And Mosheh said, “See, I go out from you, and I shall entreat YHWH, and the swarms depart from Par’oh – from his servants, and from his people, tomorrow. Only, no further does Par’oh be deceitful to not send forth the people to sacrifice to YHWH!”

The events of the plagues are continuously predicated to Pharaoh with the intention that the people only were to go to serve the Holy One, as evidenced in such other places as Exodus 9:1,9:13, 10:3, 10:4. The plagues are so terrible and destructive to the land of Egypt that the very servants of Pharaoh finally speak out to him on the basis of logic alone, and in 10:7, they refer to the purpose of the people leaving, that it was merely to serve the Hebrew deity, and nothing more. It is with this beckoning from his people, that Pharaoh makes his most glaring statement in the entire book as to the truth of what Moses had asked, and the limited knowledge he possessed of what was really going to happen, when, in 10:8-11, we see this discussion take place:
10:8 And Mosheh and Aharon returned to Par’oh, and he said to them, “Do walk, do serve YHWH your Elohim! Who and who are walking?”
10:9 And Mosheh said, “With our young and with our elderly shall we walk, and with our sons and with our daughters, with our flocks, and with our herds shall we walk, for a festival of YHWH is for us.”
10:10 And he said to them, “YHWH shall thus be with you, as I shall send you forth, and your little ones! Do see! For evil is in front of your faces…
10:11 …Not so! Do walk, who are men, and do serve YHWH, for that is your desire!” And they were driven from the face of Phar’oh.
This meeting shows that Pharaoh was being tossed back and forth in his mind as to who would be able to attend this worship ceremony. You can read the moment his heart is hardened and he changes his mind in the midst of initially allowing them to go worship. At first, he appears okay with the declaration that all Hebrew slaves and their livestock were taking part in it, but then backtracks in mid-acquiescing, and decides only the men are allowed to make the trip.
10:8 And Mosheh and Aharon returned to Par’oh, and he said to them, “Do walk, do serve YHWH your Elohim! Who and who are walking?”
10:9 And Mosheh said, “With our young and with our elderly shall we walk, and with our sons and with our daughters, with our flocks, and with our herds shall we walk, for a festival of YHWH is for us.”
10:10 And he said to them, “YHWH shall thus be with you, as I shall send you forth, and your little ones! Do see! For evil is in front of your faces…
10:11 …Not so! Do walk, who are men, and do serve YHWH, for that is your desire!” And they were driven from the face of Phar’oh.

With this refusal and conditional allowance, the plague of locusts fall upon Egypt, and is followed by the plague of darkness. The sheer power of such plagues brings Pharaoh to his knees, finally, and in 10:24-27, we see the last time Pharaoh attempts to allow the request to worship, but with his own conditions:
10:24 And Phar’oh called to Mosheh, and said, “Do walk, do serve YHWH. Only, your flocks and your herds shall stay – also, your little ones shall walk with you!”
10:25 And Mosheh said, “Even you must give into our hands sacrifices and burnt offerings, and we shall perform to YHWH our Elohim!
10:26 And even our cattle shall walk with us. There shall not be left behind a hoof – for from them shall we take to serve YHWH our Elohim, and we do not know [with] what we shall serve YHWH, until we come there.”
10:27 And YHWH strengthened the heart of Par’oh, and he was not inclined to send them forth.
This meeting displays the sudden magnanimity of Pharaoh by allowing the broadest acceptance yet of Moses’ request. However, he very quickly changes his mind at the unspeakable addition by Moses that not only shall the livestock of the Hebrews most definitely attend the worship ceremony, but Pharaoh himself must also provide the Hebrews with proper animals to sacrifice! This was too much for Pharaoh’s heart, for he could have no part in sacrificing to the deity of the Hebrews – especially with the fact that they were sacrificing what the Egyptians deemed abominations.
10:24 And Phar’oh called to Mosheh, and said, “Do walk, do serve YHWH. Only, your flocks and your herds shall stay – also, your little ones shall walk with you!”
10:25 And Mosheh said, “Even you must give into our hands sacrifices and burnt offerings, and we shall perform to YHWH our Elohim!

At the final plague wrought upon Egypt – the death of the firstborn, what has become known as the Passover – Pharaoh is at last willing to let the people go into the wilderness for the three-day journey to sacrifice to the Holy One, as has been the repeated request from the beginning of the account. In Exodus 12:31-32, we read of his final willingness to comply with the original request of Moses:
12:31 And he called for Mosheh and for Aharon at night, and said, “Do rise up! Go out from the midst of my people – even you, even the sons of Yisra’El, and do walk – do serve YHWH, as you have said!
12:32 Also, your flocks, even your herds do take, as that you have said, and do walk! And bless me, also!”
At this passage, Pharaoh has no more strength to withstand the request made to him; he sends forth the people and their flocks, as was originally asked of him, and goes so far as to ask for a blessing, as well! Holding the lifeless body of his own son in his hands has brought him to the point of giving in to the demand of Moses, with no caveats present. The people are allowed to go and perform their worship ceremony.
12:31 And he called for Mosheh and for Aharon at night, and said, “Do rise up! Go out from the midst of my people – even you, even the sons of Yisra’El, and do walk – do serve YHWH, as you have said!
12:32 Also, your flocks, even your herds do take, as that you have said, and do walk! And bless me, also!”
At this passage, Pharaoh has no more strength to withstand the request made to him; he sends forth the people and their flocks, as was originally asked of him, and goes so far as to ask for a blessing, as well! Holding the lifeless body of his own son in his hands has brought him to the point of giving in to the demand of Moses, with no caveats present. The people are allowed to go and perform their worship ceremony.

But do keep in mind that this is all that Pharaoh is expecting to happen. He gives them permission to go and worship – he does not set them free! That must be remembered. Even the people of Egypt believe that the Israelites are going to return, and in this belief, they act accordingly in good faith to not only give them valuables from their possessions, but some even decided to go out into the wilderness to engage in this worship ceremony with the Hebrew people, as Exodus 11:2 and 12:35-36, and 38 displays:
11:2 “Speak now, in the ears of the people, and a man shall ask from his neighbor, and a woman from her neighbor [for] vessels of silver, and vessels of gold.”
…
12:35 And the sons of Yisra’El, they did according to the word of Mosheh, and they asked from the Mitsrim [for] vessels of silver, and vessels of gold, and clothing,
12:36 and YHWH gave favor to the people in the eyes of the Mitsrim, and they asked, and they stripped off the Mitsrim!
…
12:38 And also a mixed multitude ascended with them, and flocks and herd – very dense cattle!
The text is not lying to us; the people gave assuming that they would be returned. This was an act of good will on behalf of the Egyptians. It was an act they performed, hoping that their generosity would engender favor from this Hebrew deity who had so obviously shown Himself to be far greater than all the assumed deities of Egypt. The people did not steal these objects of value from the Egyptians – they were willingly given for the purpose of use in the worship of the Holy One! Any reading that involves less than a true understanding that the Egyptians were kept in the dark concerning the ultimate purpose of the going-forth of the Israelites makes the Hebrew essentially people thieving from the Egyptians – there’s no way around it. This true understanding also shows why the mixed multitude provided so much trouble for the Israelites in the wilderness, and why they were so eager to return to Egypt at a moment’s notice, and so dauntlessly willing to engage in idolatry – they had left with the Hebrews with the assumption that they would go out into the wilderness, personally appease this Hebrew deity who obviously possessed great power, and then return home after the worship ceremonies were completed.

Pharaoh himself, in all his magnanimity at last, truly never expected the people to flee. There is a final detail given in the story that provides one last proof that Pharaoh had effectively been deceived at the intent of Moses this entire time. Found in Exodus 14:5, it makes absolutely no sense in the story if he had truly let the people go forever, as is commonly taught:
And it was told to the king of Mitsrayim that the people had fled. And the heart of Par’oh and his servants was turned against the people, and they said, “What is this that we have done, for we have sent forth Yisra’El from our service?”
If Pharaoh had sent the people away with no intention of them returning, then why would anyone need to tell him that they had fled? It makes absolutely no sense if read the popular way that is portrayed in films and by teachers worldwide, but it makes complete and absolute sense when read with all the Biblical details correctly in place before it: Pharaoh had no idea that the Hebrew people were not coming back! Pharaoh never knew they were leaving for good!
And it was told to the king of Mitsrayim that the people had fled. And the heart of Par’oh and his servants was turned against the people, and they said, “What is this that we have done, for we have sent forth Yisra’El from our service?”
If Pharaoh had sent the people away with no intention of them returning, then why would anyone need to tell him that they had fled? It makes absolutely no sense if read the popular way that is portrayed in films and by teachers worldwide, but it makes complete and absolute sense when read with all the Biblical details correctly in place before it: Pharaoh had no idea that the Hebrew people were not coming back! Pharaoh never knew they were leaving for good!

With all these evidences firmly established, the question must be asked as to why Pharaoh refused to allow one simple request for the Hebrews to take time off for worship. Why would he be so bold and antagonistic to such an easy request? He brought about the near-destruction of his nation through many events that he could have stopped if only he had given in to the demand of Moses – yet, he was obstinate towards a seemingly mundane request by his slave labor force.
Why?
The answer lay in yet one more detail provided in the exodus account that is typically overlooked, as well. Moses was sent to Pharaoh with the declaration that the Hebrew people be granted a work hiatus for worship, and this demand was tempered with a threat that is not commonly taught about. That threat is found in Exodus 4:21-23, when the Holy One tells Moses this:
4:21 And YHWH said to Mosheh, “When you walk to return to Mitsrayim, see all the wonders which I have set in your hand, and do them at the face of Phar’oh, and I shall strengthen his heart, and he shall not send forth the people.
4:22 And you shall say to Par’oh, ‘Thus says YHWH: “My son, My firstborn, is Yisra’El.
4:23 And I say unto you: Send forth My son, and he shall serve Me. And should you refuse to send him forth, see, I shall murder your son, your firstborn.”’”

This mandate was delivered to Pharaoh faithfully by Moses, just as Moses faithfully relayed the distinct desire to have the people be given time off to sacrifice to the Holy One. Consider the gravity of the situation: the once-fugitive failed leader of a slave labor force had returned to the most powerful empire on earth with no concern for consequence, demanding that this slave community be granted about a week off total there and back to go out into the wilderness and worship their particular deity, which was not acknowledged by the pantheon of accepted religion – and all this was topped with a threat that if their desire was not met, the very son of the king of the nation would be murdered by their deity! What’s more, since the king was himself considered a deity by his own culture, such a mandate equaled a death-threat to a very deity of Egypt! When looked at in this manner, Moses did not come humbly asking for time off, but boldly and set the stakes as high as they could be set from the get-go. It was never a “please, may we,” situation, but a “do it, or else” confrontation between the assumed power of the Egyptian cult of deities and an unknown, foreign deity of a long-oppressed, enslaved people. This was, from the outset, a religious war brimming at every moment. In Exodus 12:12, Scripture even states this reality:
And I shall cross over into the land of Mitsrayim on this night, and I shall strike every firstborn in the land of Mitsrayim, from man and until beast, and on all the deities of Mitsrayim I shall perform judgments. I am YHWH.
The resistance displayed by Pharaoh towards the desire of the Hebrews to simply go and worship was forged on the threat of death to his own son by a deity he refused to acknowledge. His resistance to the Holy One of Israel was in actuality a religious defiance. He would not succumb to the demand, because he did not believe that an unknown deity of a powerless slave labor force could be of any real threat. The Holy One of Israel used a simple request, predicated with a death threat for noncompliance, to show that He truly is the King of kings, and no deity – real or assumed – can compare to His might. He is the Almighty One, and the events of the exodus, especially when viewed in a correct light, show this reality in a powerful way!
